Not all vitamins created equal

You think your are doing something healthy by taking vitamin supplements, but the vitamin your are taking could contain nothing more than fillers and starch.

The US FDA recently fined big chain superstores for selling bottles labeled "ginko biloba" but was nothing more than rice powder.

Young Girl Shaves Head to Support Her Friend With Cancer Gets Kicked Out of School

Girl Shaves Head to Support Pal With Cancer, Gets Kicked Out of School

A 9-year-old Colorado girl who shaved her head to show support for her best friend battling cancer, was barred from attending school because her baldness violates its dress code. But on Tuesday night, following an outcry about the situation on social media, the Caprock Academy charter school in Grand Junction plans to hold a special meeting to determine if an exception will be made for the empathetic third-grader, Kamryn Renfro.

More on Yahoo Shine: Would You Shave Your Head For a Friend With Breast Cancer?

“Caprock Academy does have a detailed dress code policy, which was created to promote safety, uniformity, and a non-distracting environment for the school’s students. Under this policy, shaved heads are not permitted,” the school noted in a community statement, released to parents Monday. “Exceptions, however, are sometimes made under exigent and extraordinary circumstances.” The statement was posted on Facebook by Wendy Smith Campbell — whose daughter, Delaney Clements, is battling the rare childhood cancer neuroblastoma, and whose hair loss from chemotherapy inspired her friend Kamryn to go bald, too. To the post, Campbell added, “Please tell me how a shaved head is a distraction to a learning environment,” prompting a slew of supportive responses.

Kamryn, who was permitted to return to school on Tuesday for the time being, tells KKCO that she decided to shave her head because “it felt like the right thing to do.” And at least one other friend has joined her as of Monday, according to a photo of another shiny-headed girl posted to Campbell’s Facebook page, with the caption, “Another baldie to add to the bunch!!!!”

Facebook posts — by both Campbell and Kamryn's mom, Jamie Olson Renfro — brought the story to light beginning on Sunday. That’s when Renfro wrote, in part, “We do sign that we understand and agree to the rules every year...but honestly, I never thought my 9-year-old daughter would do something so courageous, brave and selfless. For this reason, I am asking for anyone that would like to support Kamryn, to do so. I have to wake a little girl up tomorrow, who was excited to go to school and talk to her peers about what she had done and why, and I get to try to explain why she can't do that without making her lose her spirit or feel like she is being punished for something so amazing.” That post, shared more than 180 times, drew many comments, including, “Anyone would be lucky to have her as a friend. I hope the school realizes the error of their decision.”

Campbell, in turn, posted a photo of Delaney and Kamryn together, writing, “So very upset that they would punish a beautiful little girl for being strong and brave and standing up for what she cares and believes in!!!” Since Monday, it’s garnered 660 likes and has been shared more than 2,100 times. And the majority of commenters have been overwhelmingly supportive. "That little girl rocks!! And so do her parents for raising such an amazingly compassionate and empathetic human!! Good for them. Stand strong!" one person wrote. "If the little boys do it, she should be able to do it too. She is so full of compassion and love, we all could learn from this sweet girl," wrote another.

Caprock Academy did not respond to a phone call or email from Yahoo Shine; Campbell and Renfro also could not be reached.

But on Tuesday, Renfro added a lengthy post to Facebook to thank everyone for their support “from the bottom of our hearts” and to explain that there is no ill will. “At no point during this ordeal was Kamryn's school not supportive of her decision, nor show compassion...they just made a decision to enforce their dress code, which we were asking to be changed,” she writes. “They responded to all of our requests, and have treated us with nothing but respect the whole time. Now that we have seen just how much 2 little girls can change the world and touch so many hearts, we are asking for all of this attention to embrace awareness of childhood cancer.”

Eighteen-year-old Zach Belden started an Instagram account for his 80-year-old great-grandma, Betty Simpson, after she was diagnosed with cancer. He figured the popular social network would be a good way to keep family members updated on her progress.
Little did he know that close friends and family would not be the only ones interested in keeping tabs on "grandmabetty33," who gained popularity on the Internet thanks to her selfies and videos. In them, she is not afraid to throw up a peace sign, stick out her tongue or simply express her gratitude for the support they offer online.

Read What did Doctor's Prescribe to this 81 year old man for Beating Cancer:

Doctor’s Prescription for Beating Cancer: Running More Than 200 Marathons

Not age, not weather, not even cancer can keep Dr. Moses Christian from running.
photo courtesy of Dr. Moses ChristianThe 81-year-old physician battling prostate cancer will run his 19th L.A. marathon on Sunday, one of more than 200 marathons he's run over 18 years. Christian was diagnosed with an advanced stage of the disease in 1994, and it has since metastasized and spread to his spine. Nevertheless, the man on a mission continues to work full time as a general surgeon and practitioner in Beaumont, California, and runs a marathon every month.
Furthermore, he's skipped chemotherapy in favor of a vegetarian diet, alternative medicine, and, most importantly, running.
"One thing that's going through my mind when I run is the health benefit, and then the challenge of it, the determination," Christian tells the Good News Blog. "Especially when you do one a month. There are times when you think you can't do it because of the pain and all, but I tell myself, no I have to finish it. How can I go back after travelling and going this distance and tell the people at home that I quit?"
Dr. Moses ChristianWhile Christian only began running only at age 61, he has conquered more than many who've been hitting the trails their entire lives. For 14 years, the doctor has run a marathon every single month. He got into it when his cousin dared him and quickly became hooked.
Christian initially believed running great distances was bad for the knees, but he changed his mind once he took up the sport.
"It is a good addiction," Christian remarks. "One of the secrets I have lived this long with the cancer is my exercise. A good diet and a stress-free life, it's a holistic approach."
Christian opted out of radiation years ago, as he felt the treatment did more harm than good. He was told surgery wasn't an option, which actually made him happy because he didn't want to quit running.
As a substitute, the doctor visited an alternative medicine clinic and started taking all-natural vaccines. Keeping his health in check, he adopted a mostly vegetarian and vegan diet, with the occasional serving of fish and ice cream.
Otherwise, it's all about marathons. Christian even ran the Boston Marathon in 2013, which was disrupted by two fatal bombings. He was on mile 20 when officials halted the competition.
"They told me to stop. They said I couldn't go any further," he recalls. "They said to come rest in the tent. I said no. I had planned whatever happens, I'm going to finish. I took my own road, my own route. I'm a very stubborn man."
Dr. Moses ChristianChristian finished the 26.2 miles his own way and would later learn what had transpired.
In addition to running, the spry senior participates in biathlons and is a thrill seeker. He climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in 1997 and went bungee jumping in New Zealand in 2007.
"Running a marathon is much harder than jumping. You just close your eyes and jump and trust the rope," Christian says.
It's his ability to look beyond cancer that makes him such a winner. He hangs his medals in his office as a means of motivating patients, and he pushes everyone to test their limits.
His motto is to lead by example.
"Whatever you do, do it for the glory of God," Christian remarks. "Be an inspiration to others."

Angelina Jolie gets treated for breast cancer before she even had breast cancer.

Angelina Jolie gets treated for breast cancer before she even had breast cancer.

Angelina Jolie has revealed she underwent a preventative double mastectomy because she carries a "faulty" gene, BRCA1, that puts her at an 87% risk of developing breast cancer.  The actress, 37, opened up about her decision in a personal op-ed piece in the New York Times on May 14, 2013.  Jolie, who lost her mother Marcheline Bertrand to ovarian cancer, completed three months of medical procedures, which included having her breasts surgically reconstructed.  "I am fortunate to have a partner Brad Pitt, who is so loving and supportive, "the actress wrote. "Brad was at the Pink Lotus Breast Center, where I was treated, for every minute of the surgeries."

Company Makes All Their Employees Go Bald To Raise Money For Cancer

This Company Asked Their Employees to Go Bald, and it Became a $2.1-Million Investment

A company that goes bald together, does incredible things together, as one commendable business demonstrates.

On Monday, 428 people at Granite Telecommunications in Quincy, MA shaved their heads in the lobby of their corporate headquarters, raising $2.1 million to support cancer research.
The idea began as a joke when CEO Rob Hale dared one of his employees, who sported a ZZ Top-style beard, to take it off for charity. It turned into something far beyond expectations.
"I told him, we'll give $10,000 if you'll shave it, and he agreed to do it," Hale tells the Good News Blog. "The next day, one of our teammates said his family had been affected by cancer, and he would be willing to shave his head for $1,000."
Hale sent an email around saying that he'd donate money for anyone who agreed to follow suit. When the number of people involved neared 100, Hale said he would double that amount, making it $2,000 a head. When it neared 300, Hale's mother got involved, agreeing to match the initial pitch and bringing the stakes to $3,000 a head. When close to 400 employees were ready to be sheared, Hale set the bounty at $5,000 a head.
In no time at all, the total was at over $2 million.
"In a few weeks, it went from a whimsical comment to a galvanizing moment," Hale remarks. "It makes a powerful statement about our company, and it makes a powerful statement about cancer."

Nearly two-thirds of the male employees at Granite Communications were part of the cutting ceremony Monday, as well as 20 women who either went bald or put their coifs toward Locks for Love. Eighteen local barbers donated their time, lining up chairs in the lobby of the office and trimming away as music played in the background. There were also gift bags for everybody and a mural to be signed.
"It speaks to a team that's caring compassionate, bold, energetic; I hope we are all those things and I think we showed that Monday," Hale comments. "The other truth, cancer affects everybody… nearly everybody who was doing was doing it support or to memorialize someone who has fought or is fighting cancer."

That includes Hale, who lost his father to pancreatic cancer six years ago. All the money raised will be donated to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, a hospital which helped Hale's father survive more than 18 months after his diagnosis.
All in all, the Granite Communications team did something immense that will be felt far behind the walls of their building.
"It was a really an electric couple of hours," Hale remarks.
For once, it appears everybody got the memo.

Read About Michael Douglas, Hugh Jackman, Christina Applegate & Jake "The Snake" Roberts & their encounter with cancer

Celebrities battle cancer

Actress Christina Applegate had a bilateral mastectomy in 2008. Doctors had diagnosed her with cancer in her left breast and offered her the options of either radiation treatment and testing for the rest of her life or removal of both breasts.
Michael Douglas offered some interesting insight as to how he may have developed the throat cancer that he was diagnosed with in August 2010. Douglas later told the "Today" show that his tumor was gone.
Hugh Jackman posted a picture to Instagram in November showing his nose bandaged after his doctor found and removed a cancerous growth.
Jake "The Snake" Roberts is known for never backing down from a fight, and that now includes a battle against cancer. According to TMZ, the pro wrestler has a cancerous tumor behind his knee. Roberts isn't letting the news stop him, though. He's planning to have the tumor removed and then be ready to throw down March 14 for Jersey Championship Wrestling.
